As you’ve probably heard, Konami are planning to include brand new voice overs in their upcoming Silent Hill HD Collection (which consists of Silent Hill 2 & 3 remastered) due for release later this year exclusively on PlayStation 3. Many fans, including myself, didn’t like the idea of this and couldn’t understand why. Until now, that is. When asked by a fan on his Facebook page why his voice was being replaced, Guy Cihi, the voice of protagonist James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2, shed a bit of light on the situation.
Fan: Hi Guy, I love your work as James and thanks for adding me. I was just wondering with the news about the Silent Hill 2 & 3 HD collection out now and recent talk of re-recording of audio, may I ask a question? If given the opportunity, would you reprise your role as James? Or are you not at liberty to say?
Guy Cihi: Sure, I’d do it again if they asked but they won’t. The problem is that Konami has already been notified they owe me residuals for all previous re-uses of my mocap and voice recordings. Changing the voice won’t excuse them with the next release because my mocap is still all in there. (Sorry, Konami, I own those rights!) I’ll get around to seeking compensation through the court one of these days. I simply don’t have the time for it right now. Anybody who has ever sought justice through the court knows how much money and energy it takes. Hope this doesn’t bum you guys out….It’s just the way it is.
What is also worth noting, is that 2 days before this conversation, an earlier post showed that Guy knew nothing about the voices being replaced.
Fan: Mr. Guy I heard about Silent Hill 2 is getting new voices and I’m terrified! I mean the original voices are excellent and they want to change them :/ Do you know something?
Guy Cihi: This is the first I’ve heard of it. Interesting…
It’s quite a sad situation and a shame things have turned sour. The voice acting was memorable and suited the characters well, but this isn’t the first time Konami have been known for not compensating their voice actors. Thessaly Lerner, voice of nurse Lisa Garland in the first Silent Hill game, was not compensated for use of her voice Silent Hill 3. She was awarded a small settlement and her voice was removed from the game before release.
Will you still be picking up the Collection? Or has Konami’s treatment of Cihi and the decision to replace the original voices put you off? Let us know in the box below!
